like badgers and birds you’re free to spread your words to speak clearly ‘cause it don’t mean a thing no, no it don’t mean a thing if the cash machine don’t ring you can stand on the streets and shout it out real loud you can speak the truth in front of any crowd but it don’t mean a thing no, no it don’t mean a thing if the cash machine don’t ring they’ll come for you if you get an inkling they’ll come for you if you get to thinking they’ll come for you in the middle of the night to put out the flame that shed light on their lies

You can carve your name in all the trees you see, but the thing you seek is free. It's so simple. And you can cry a sacred name in the loneliness of prayer and pain, and waste your breath. Its' so simple. You can surround yourself with sounds of dropping change, and hope that no one notices your shadow's dead. You can lock your doors and pretend that all the contraband in side is yours but before you know what time it is you'll find yourself just lying, justifying wars. And it really is so simple. You can call it a cliche, but the novelty of all these things that people do and say is nothing compared to love.

"what did I do wrong?" "something is not right with me," "but I'm hopeful, that while you're breathing deep, your sensitivity's just asleep, not gone." "You say you love me but that tone is so unknown." "and the patterns on your face are signs"

about

This is not the compilation. This is the archive of songs that were on the "Like Badgers and Birds" benefit compilation for Wikileaks.

Because the plight of Wikileaks affects so many people, I thought it more effective to allow the compilation to grow and change as more folks became interested and submitted songs in order to promote awareness of this struggle. These new additions in turn keep the compilation vital, more of a process than a finished product. At any given time, the comp is "complete" in the sense that I have gathered the best songs available to me and arranged them in the best order I could. But as the pool of available material changes, so will the compilation. Songs that retire from the comp will be available here, in the hopes that listeners can make their own personal comps if they choose, or simply acknowledge all of the generous musicians who gave their time, creativity, and effort to donate a song to this cause.
Thank you.
